Ode to the Prospective Mason - © 2008

So you want to be a mason

Of the speculative kind

Please don’t let me sway you

We like you to know own mind

Yes we have our secrets

That we’re sworn to keep

But in due time you’ll know them

If you take the leap

We are monster or ogres

It is not the way we strive

But once you come on over

You will make new friends for life

We do a lot of unsung work

Of the charitable kind

It’s mainly what we are about

I hope you do not mind

Once in you’re in forever even if you leave

But that’s not what we aim for

So won’t you become a Freemason?

Won’t you join us if you please?

THE LARK ASCENDING - ©  2009

The lark has ascended
To King Solomon’s chair
Breathing in
The rarefied air
I bid you welcome
Whatever your station
From grand lodge or
Province to
Apprentice freemason
I would like to think
That my year in office
Is all I could ask for
But one thing I promise
I will do my utmost
With the honour bestowed
To uphold the principles
Of the blue white and gold
The all-seeing eye
Of the one
Who looks down
Will
I hope be impressed
As I take up the challenge
And succeed in each test
But all I can say
When I hand over the jewel
Is good luck to the mason?
Who takes my post
It’s so cool
The lark will descend
He’ll come down with a bump
Then gravitate in stages
To the left at the front
His year will be over
Good times had by all
As King Solomon’s Chair
Holds someone else
In its thrall
